Value-Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax levied on the consumption of goods and services in South Africa. VAT can be calculated in two ways depending on whether the price is exclusive or inclusive of VAT:
VAT Exclusive Calculation
When the price does not include VAT, you add 15% of the base price to determine the total amount payable.
Formula:
VAT = Amount × 15%
Total = Amount + VAT
VAT Inclusive Calculation
When the price already includes VAT, you extract the VAT portion by dividing the total amount by 1.15.
Formula:
Exclusive Amount = Total / 1.15
VAT = Total - Exclusive Amount
